Guiding Principle

It is important for you as an Advisor to understand what Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in the CBT for Tinnitus E-Programme aims to do for people who are troubled by distressing tinnitus. To this end, there is a Guiding Principle to bear in mind from the outset. This Guiding Principle is included in the Introduction section of the CBT for Tinnitus E-Programme, intended to clarify the issue for Users of the course (referred to later as TEP Users) from the outset. Please read the Guiding Principle by following the link and/or download a copy:

It has only recently (in 2022 - even though CBT has been used successfully for many years and has a robust evidence base) become necessary to spell out exactly what CBT for Tinnitus is intended to do following a small minority of TEP Users anticipating a change in their tinnitus during the course.

Because of this misunderstanding, Users were monitoring for changes in their tinnitus unwittingly exacerbating tinnitus loudness perception, maintaining and in some cases increasing high levels of arousal, as well as perpetuating their distress over the tinnitus, any or all of which prevents progress and cancels out any improvements they would otherwise begin to experience. This important understanding needed to be addressed directly, hence the 'Guiding Principle'.
